The 9th Annual LA County
Sheriff’s Spring Soccer Cup was played June 3rd & 4th,
2017 at Mount San Antonio College soccer complex.
There were eight teams competing for
bragging rights for top honors as the law enforcement/fire agency best soccer
team.
TEAMS COMPETING:
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Gold
Team
LAPD United
Orange County Fire
LA Unified School Police
LAPD Centurions
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Green
Team
San Bernardino Sheriff’s Dept.
Los Angeles Airport Police
Our first game pitted us against the
LA Unified School Police. Our team stood
strong defensively and did not allow a goal against us through the entire
game. Final score: LAPD United 4 – School Police 0.
The second game of the qualifying
round put us against our old time nemesis, the Sheriff’s Gold Team. The Gold Team won this event last year and
were looking to repeat. However, LAPD
United had a different mindset.
The game was hot and grueling with
the Sheriff’s scoring the first goal.
That score stood until the 2nd half when LA United made the
adjustments and started scoring as well.
The final score: LAPD United 4 –
Sheriff’s Gold Team 2. Our guys worked
hard to dethrone the Sheriffs and met their mark in doing so.
Game 3 LAPD United played a new team
to the tournament, the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Dept. This was a scrappy team that was in your face on
every opportunity. The play continued
back and forth wherein either team could have won . It finally ended in a tie
1-1.
At the conclusion of the preliminary
round, we were in first place, so on to the gold medal/cup game. As fortune would have it, we drew the
alternate LAPD team, the LAPD Centurions.
Due to the amount of pride each team
has, it would be an extremely hard fought battle for both teams for the right
to carry the crowning cup. At the end,
LAPD United prevailed beating the Centurions 2-1.
Congratulations to the LA County
Sheriff’s, Sgt Ruben Nava for all of his hard work in putting together another exemplary
soccer tournament.
