Manny Mandieta Makes A Fantastic Stop in Shoot-Outs
SoCal Police &
fire Soccer Cup
Pomona, CA
February 6th,
7th & 8th, 2015
This is our first soccer tournament of the 2015. This tournament brought together eight police
and fire agency teams for a three day soccer competition in Pomona, CA
The teams were identified as:
LAPD United LASD
Gold
Long Beach PD LAPD
Centurions
LA Unified School PD LAX
PD
LA County Fire Western
Select – Combo
In our first game we played Long Beach PD, a team we have
not seen in many years. We had no idea
of their strengths or weaknesses if any.
We subsequently beat them 3-1 with goals by Joel Dominguez, Kenny
Pintado and Greg Sayers.
In our second game we played the LA Unified School
Police. This team, at times, has been
difficult for us to tactically address.
However on this occasion, our confidence shined by winning the game
5-1. This was a solid total team effort
by all our players. They came out strong
in the beginning and never let pedal off the gas.
Our 3rd game was against the Western Select-
Combo team. A group of players from
various law enforcement agencies in Orange County and LA County. This was the first time we’ve competed with
each other. They were a talented group
of players with high skills and motivation.
They played us physically and with speed. It was a see-saw game back and forth. At the end of regulation and overtime the
score remained in a 3-3 tie.
On to shoot-outs. In
goal was our masterful goalie Manny Mandieta.
Each team scored through the first 3-players, still leaving it in a
tie. Western Select goalie stopped a
shot by one of our players followed by one of the Western Select players
shooting wide and over the goal. That
still left it tied. Our goalie Manny dug
in his heels and concentrated on the last the first five to shoot against
him. The opponent approached the ball,
struck it with power as Manny threw his body across the goal mouth to stop the
shot. In the end, our final player scored
and LAPD United prevailed to advance to the final championship game for the
tournament.
The two top teams left in the tournament were LAPD United
and the LA County Sheriff’s Gold Team. This
was a typical LAPD-Sheriff’s battle for the cup. This is a common experience for us to be in
the finals with the Sheriff’s.
As the game progressed, it was clear that it would be a dog
fight with bragging rights and a deep personal pride to win by both teams. As the game drug on, the Sheriff's were first to score in the first half. Both teams had several
opportunities to score that were defeated. LAPD United finally in the second half scored the tying goal. 1-1.
In the last 5-minutes of the game, LAPD United was called
for a hand ball in the penalty box and the Sheriffs were awarded a penalty kick
which they converted to a goal. That was
the winning effort and gave the Sheriff’s the game winner.
End results were LA Co Sheriffs were the 1st
Place Cup Winners with LAPD United finishing in 2nd Place.
Congratulations to our brother in green. They are a great bunch of guys we've come to
enjoy and respect.
Following are actions photos of our players during
competition during this 3-day event.
Congratulations to all those players and friends and families that supported
our efforts. You all did an exceptional job
and made many sacrifices that we all recognize.
