California Department of Corrections (CDC) hosted their 1st Annual Law Enforcement Soccer Tournament in Corona, CA the weekend of November 7th & 8th, 2009. This was a charity event where the proceeds of the tournament went to Abused Children’s Fund.
Teams were made up of correctional staff members from Chino’s Institute for Men,, Calipatria State Prison and Rock Mountain, San Diego State Prison. Additionally, the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Airport Police (LAX) and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department were invited.
In the first game of the tournament, we played the LAX Police. This is a scrappy team that continues to get stronger every time we play them. The first half proved to be fruitless for goal scoring. Both teams had several opportunities to get goals, but were thwarted by inaccurate shots and just plain old bad luck. In the second half, LAPD managed to strike two goals into the net. That was sufficient to continue on to the next round.
Unfortunately, several of the CDC teams failed to muster sufficient players to constitute a team. That left two teams in the match that each won one game apiece. So LA County Sheriff’s drew the LAPD in the finals.
This was another game of lost chances to score. Both teams had great opportunities to score but failed. LAPD scored twice leading 2-0 with goals by Ofcr Joel Dominguez and Joey Stevenson. That score stood throughout the remainder of the game wherein LAPD came out as the tournament “Champions”…
We wish to thank the host, the California Dept. of Corrections and Ofcr J. Ruiz and Sgt J. Lara for the opportunity to play in this tournament.
